Turn Up The Volume Knob

There is an amazing product coming out soon called the surface dial and it is beautiful. I mean a magnificent piece of modern engineering. Sooooooo, I decided to make something similar and it worked but now I know I need to build a better version. Here is version one.

Materials:

  • Cherry hardwood
  • HDD bearing
  • HC-06 bluetooth module
  • Adafruit Trinket pro 3v

Tools:

  • Drill press
  • Band saw
  • Soldering iron
  • 3D printer

The Process:

So the electrical inspiration came from Great Scott’s youtube channel. He hacked the inputs to outputs of the an HDD assembly. And It was very intuitive and cool. He basically exploited the characteristics of the motor to track the position of the stator and output that data to a microcontroller using the ADC.

This was mostly a hardware build and here it is. It’s not yet functional because my friend Andrew is a machinist and he said why not make it out of aluminum? And I was like you right I should. So I went to work designing that one, But it was still worth posting this one.

I took a nap! Jealous?
